This is the most important part of the process, where we learn from you about your objectives and goals. You have earned your assets and we want to help them grow, but also to protect them. You tell us about how much risk you can tolerate as well as how much you want in returns. Sometimes both are not possible and clients learn where to be flexible. We also explore some estate and tax planning issues. If you have professionals, we include them in the process. If you need professionals, we can make introductions. We review the ownership structure with them as well as goals for inheritance or gifting.
Investment Policy Statement:
Many advisors refer to this document as a "road map". It tells us where you want to go, how you want to get there and how to evaluate results. We measure the portfolio performance against the guidelines provided in the Statement. As your goals can change, the IPS should be updated on a regular basis.
Investment Monitoring and Review:
Using special computer programs, we track all the investment activity in all your accounts. We can report by account and by grouping accounts together. Every month we reconcile your statements to our computer data. Every quarter we send you a report showing how you have done, both before and after fees. If we see some assets are consistently missing the guidelines, we know where to make changes. When the asset allocation changes beyond accepted ranges, again we make changes, often selling when there are gains and buying when prices are down.
Annual Client Meetings:
We like to meet personally with clients for an annual review. During the year, communication via Skype, WhatsApp, email and phone is usually enough, unless there is a major change in goals. We understand that our non US clients are not always available to meet and we try to find a convenient and secure location. Computer communications has opened up a lot of opportunities, but also has security risks.
It is very important that our clients understand the process and participate fully. It is our job to make the steps clear and to explain along the way.
When it comes to investments, if we cannot explain how they work, we don't do them until we can.
